Recovering Gold From Apple iPhones & The Great Bin Disappearance – April & May 2016 Recycling News

April and May have seen a wealth of new recycling stories appear, such as news from tech-giant Apple on the gold recovered from their Apple Renew program and updates on Jaguar's REALCAR scheme.

Striking Gold

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="878"]Image from the Telegraph Image from the Telegraph[/caption] This past month Apple have reported recovering almost 1000kg of gold with a worth of £28 million through the use of its take-back initiative, Apple Renew. Apple Renew is a global program which lets consumers bring used Apple devices to any Apple Store for recycling, in return for money off future Apple devices (iPhone 7, anyone?) They also recovered 3000kg of silver, 45800kg of steel and 1,339,600kg of copper from recycling products such as iPhones and iPads. Recycling electronic devices keeps them out of landfills, ensuring the resources they contain can be re-used - who’d have known your old iPhone 4 was useful after all!

Bye – Bye bins!

Last month Pilita Clark expressed her distaste at the vanishing of the bins at the Financial Times office after employers were advised to replace desk bins with communal recycling stations. The idea behind the intervention was to try and encourage employees to recycle more and throw away less. However, the actual result of spiriting away the bins was a mountain of litter building up in the office, with some employees even resulting to pinching bins from meeting rooms. Controversially, Keep America Beautiful found that the best way of encouraging workplace recycling was to place a recycling bin along with a general waste bin alongside each desk, resulting in less contamination of recyclable materials. Let’s hope they get their bins back soon!

The REALCAR With A Real Responsibility

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="862"]The REALCAR With A Real Responsibility Image from Jaguar[/caption] Jaguar Land Rover’s project REALCAR hit an amazing milestone in April with the project having reclaimed 50,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap back into the production process. The process involves UK press shops segregating waste aluminium scrap so that it can be sent back into production to be re-melted into recycled aluminium sheet for use in Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. The REALCAR project aims to boost the amount of recycled aluminium used in vehicle manufacture to 75% by 2020, lowering their overall carbon footprint and reducing the amount of CO2 from entering the atmosphere by not using primary aluminium material. Jaguar also has a UK take-back service which ensures the cars are disposed of treated in an environmentally responsible manner at the end of their life, making sure than no more than 5% ends up in landfill.
